These two articles I have read on publishing are incredibly insightful. The first one you did confirmed my suspicions to be honest. I think a major overhaul of the industry is needed and you're comparison with the music industry pre-streaming is a really intriguing one.

Thanks for dropping a few indie publisher names. I finished my debut book a few months ago and am finding it difficult to find a potential publisher, let alone getting it published. Many of the indie publishers have certain criteria on what they're looking for. I've had a few rejections but was prepared for that, but I haven't submitted to as many publishers as anticipated. I am coming round to the idea of cutting out the middle man and self-publishing, though that costs money.

It's not easy being a writer is it!

Just remember that there are Indie editors, formatters and cover designers out there, too, that want to help the Indie author. And it doesn't have to break the bank, either, nor just be gAI shlock. It is actually far cheaper and easier than most imagine. It's the marketing that's the hard part. But, not even the trad-pub do most of the marketing anymore, they expect the author to do most of it.

I agree Tiffanie, and that is a useful reminder. I am struck by the lack of an organising system or method where all of the skills for book publishing are brought together under as one resource for use by writers, designers, illustrators and editors. That resource, combined with a data led funding model of the type I outlined earlier would seem to be all we need. Creative people can then market their work while retaining rights and creative ownership and all earnings. Substack is achieving a community, and I am grateful for that, but isn't organising the marketing or 'bookshop' function. Yet.

Thank you, Tiffany, that's a good point. I feel like there's a potential punky DIY element to being an indie author and self-publishing that really appeals to me, and being able to collaborate with others independently would be great.

Well, when you are ready to put your punk boots on, let me know. I do formatting (interiors) and cover design. I know someone who does editing, who used to work for NASA. So, there is a big piece of it!

Wow, NASA! Thanks you, Tiffanie! I'll keep that in mind!

No Craig it’s bloody difficult. What did surprise me is that a lot of the difficulty is the system itself. I contrast that with the design industry which is where I spent a lot of time and although that is also difficult there are no major players distorting the market dynamics. If you have talent imagination and drive you have a fair chance.

Yes, I'm finding it really inaccessible generally. No wonder so many people do self-publish.

That's how it should be, about the art itself as opposed to what will fit a particular market.

Thank you for this- never heard of those three houses but they sound intriguing.

Neither had I before my research David. They may be worth a try.
